WHAT IS CycleQuest ? CycleQuest is an extension of the cycle orienteering sport Trailquest. Participants (either individuals or teams) are issued with a map with checkpoints marked (plus Score sheets, map holder & compass). The checkpoints carry points varying with their distance from Newport and/or their accessibility. The aim is to locate these checkpoints and accumulate the maximum number of points in the time allocated or chosen (depending on how competitive or leisurely entrants choose to be). Checkpoint codes (and/or answers) are recorded on the Scoresheets and returned for tallying. Bonus points and time penalties etc. add to the challenge for the more competitively minded. CycleQuest is now available for individuals or teams. It is run by Newport Bike Hire throughout the year starting and finishing at Wholefoods of Newport on East Street. All participants will be logged on an annual event data base and will be issued with a Certificates of Achievement. Category winners will be eligible for “end of year” prizes and free entry into next years Newport Spring Festival cycling and running events. CycleQuest - OPTIONS RoadQuest: All checkpoints are easily visible from the cycle friendly roads from Newport and surrounding Preseli Ranges. Stunning coastal and countryside views and great cycling make this a memorable cycling activity. Challenging in places with a 3 hour time limit for competitive entrants. TrailQuest: A comparable off-road course takes entrants through the best of the surrounding bridleways and trails combing great scenery and diverse off-road cycling. Challenging in places with a 3 hour time limit for competitive entrants. NB: You may encounter mud!!! FunQuest: This option involves a less challenging course made up of a mixture of on-road and off-road checkpoints, observational checkpoints and seamlessly weaves cafes and pubs into the scheme of things. There are no time limits and the rules are unbelievably lax. JuniorQuest: Smaller maps, shorter distances, gentler slopes (difficult in Newport) and a few fun checkpoints make this option suitable for younger family members. Adults should accompany children under 12 years old. UltraQuest: For the adventurous and fit with plenty of time to spare, this challenge includes all of the above courses both on-road and off-road with observational checkpoints and every bonus and penalty that the activity can justify. There is a 6 hour time limit for competitive entrants but leisurely entrants are free to make a day of it. There are points galore. NB: Walkers & Runners are welcome to try any of the above routes. CycleQuest EVENT STUCTURE 1. The aim of the event is to locate and cycle to Checkpoints on a map and transfer the Checkpoint Code or information to your Score Sheet. A map and Score Sheet will be issued at the start. There are 30 Checkpoints in total. All are marked on the map by a coloured circle and the Checkpoint Marker (or QUESTION. clue) is located in the centre of the circle. · The 10 green Checkpoints are primarily for FunQuest entrants and carry a maximum of 200 points with bonuses. · There are 20 Checkpoints for competitive entrants. The 10 marked in red are TrailQuest checkpoints and the10 marked in blue are RoadQuest checkpoints all visible from the road. Each group of 10 carry a maximum of 460 points with bonuses. NB: TrailQuest and RoadQuest competitors can use the more accessible but lower scoring FunQuest checkpoints if they wish. FunQuest entrants are similarly free to stretch themselves by seeking the more widespread and challenging TrailQuest and RoadQuest checkpoints. 2. TrailQuest and RoadQuest competitors have a strict 3 hour time limit and will be penalised 5 points for every minute or part of a minute over the limit. The winner in each category will be the person (or team) with the most points, times only being used to rank competitors with the same score. There is no time limit for FunQuest. 3. UltraQuest competitors have a strict 5 hour time limit and will also be penalised 5 points for every minute or part of a minute over the limit. The 10 TrailQuest and 10 RoadQuest checkpoints give a total of 1000 points with bonuses and the 10 FunQuest checkpoint give a further 200 points for a grand maximum total of 1200 points. 4. Competitors can however lose points for a variety of reasons. These include:
5. The start and finish of all CycleQuest events is from Wholefoods of Newport - Newport Bike Hire on East street, Newport from 9.00 am – 5.30pm Monday to Saturday. 6. After filling in a CycleQuest Entry Form, entrants will be issued with the event map and the appropriate Scoresheet/s for their chosen category. Competitive entrants in RoadQuest, TrailQuest and UltraQuest will be given 5 minutes to familiarise themselves with the map and Scoresheets and ask any questions on the structure of the event (but none on the map or any aspects of the routes) before having their official start time entered on their Scoresheets – your CycleQuest is now underway! 7. All CycleQuest events are individual or team events. If a number of individuals or teams wish to compete with each other on the same day for example, the start time of each individual or team will be staggered by an appropriate time (typically 5 minutes) to prevent “shadowing”. 8. On completion, all entrants must return everything issued to a member of staff of Wholefoods of Newport or Newport Bike Hire. Competitors in particular should ensure that the staff member writes their Finish Time on the Scoresheet. If possible, scoring will be done immediately, but is more likely to be completed for the next day. All results will be entered on the Newport Spring Festival CycleQuest Record Sheet to determine the annual individual and team winners. Have Fun. |
